Cream cheese, one of the most versatile dairy products, is used for spreading, in sauces and in dessert recipes. Low-fat or light cream cheese is a healthy way to enjoy the distinctive flavor of cream cheese without the high fat content and associated calories. If you run out of low-fat cream cheese, you can opt for several good substitutes from common kitchen ingredients.

You can use substitute non-fat cream cheese for low-fat cream cheese, even if the flavor is not as rich. Since the consistency is the same as that of low-fat cream cheese, it is a good alternative when you use pure cream cheese or as a layer under another food, such as smoked salmon. However, mixing non-fat cream cheese with other ingredients to prepare sauces and glazes results in a watery mixture that is unlikely to be adequate.
